Open Call: Re:Living Pilot Project Seeks Renovation Initiatives in the Stuttgart Region Help shape the future of renovation

Istock 468752064

As part of Re:Living, VELUX and IBA’27 are looking for a renovation project in the Stuttgart region that can help explore one of the most important questions facing the built environment today:

How can renovation scale?

The selected project will become a real-world demonstration of how healthier homes, lower environmental impact and affordability can be achieved within existing buildings. Through an open and collaborative process, the project will contribute knowledge and insights that can help accelerate renovation across the wider building industry.

How can we make existing homes fit for the future?

Under the title Re:Living, VELUX, IBA’27, DGJ Architektur and Transsolar are jointly seeking a pilot project that demonstrates how existing residential buildings can be transformed with a clear ambition: energy-efficient, healthy to live in, and economically viable.

The Re:Living project aims to develop a transferable approach to residential renovation. At its core is the question of how energy efficiency, living quality and resource efficiency can be combined in practice—not as an exceptional case, but as a model that can be replicated at scale.

The selected project will be realised during IBA’27, from April to October 2027, and will be accessible to both professionals and the public as an open renovation process.

We are looking for

Property owners or developers who are planning to renovate a residential building in the Stuttgart region and are willing to shape the process together with the project partners.

Suitable projects include
  • Single-family homes
  • Two-family homes
  • Multi-family residential buildings
  • Projects in an early planning stage
  • Projects that are open to further conceptual and design development

What the project offers

The selected participant will benefit from more than financial support:

  • A substantial contribution to construction costs from the project partners
  • Professional guidance throughout planning and implementation from an experienced interdisciplinary team
  • Concept development that combines economic viability with high-quality living conditions
  • International visibility as part of IBA’27

Why participate?

The project is more than a renovation. It is an opportunity to help develop and test a new approach to renovating existing buildings—one that can be shared, replicated and scaled.

By participating, you will contribute to a broader conversation about how renovation can help address climate, housing and resource challenges while creating healthier and more affordable homes for future generations.
